Working Holiday Visas (WHV)
The Working Holiday Visa scheme is a crucial source of seasonal labor for New Zealand's horticulture and tourism sectors.
Basic Requirements
While agreements differ slightly by country, the general requirements are:
- You must be between 18 and 30 years old (or 35 for select countries like the UK, Canada, and parts of Europe).
- You cannot bring children.
- You must have a return ticket, or enough funds to buy one.
- You must have sufficient funds to support yourself (usually NZD $4,200).
Quotas vs. Uncapped
New Zealand has agreements with dozens of countries, but they are split into two types:

The Horticulture Extension
If you complete three months of seasonal work in the horticulture or viticulture industries (e.g., picking fruit, pruning vines), you may be eligible to extend your WHV for an additional three months. This was explicitly designed to funnel transient labor into regional export industries.
