Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Points System

New Zealand completely overhauled the SMC resident visa in late 2023. The old 180-point system has been replaced by a simplified, rigid 6-point threshold.

How the 6-Point System Works

Flowchart illustrating how points are claimed under the new Skilled Migrant Category.

To be eligible to apply for the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa, you must claim exactly 6 points. You cannot claim more, and you cannot apply with fewer. Crucially, points are no longer awarded for age or regional location.

You must claim points from one of the three skill categories (3 to 6 points), and you can make up the remainder (if needed) using New Zealand work experience (1 to 3 points).

1. Skill Category (Choose ONE)

You can only claim points from one of the following groups. You cannot combine them (e.g., you cannot claim points for both income and a qualification).

Basis for Claim Requirement Points Awarded
Income 3x the median wage 6 points
2x the median wage 4 points
1.5x the median wage 3 points
Qualification Doctorate (Level 10) 6 points
Master's degree (Level 9) 5 points
Bachelor Honours or Postgrad Diploma (Level 8) 4 points
Bachelor's degree (Level 7) 3 points
NZ Registration
(Occupational)
Requires 6+ years of training 6 points
Requires 5 years of training 5 points
Requires 4 years of training 4 points
Requires 2 years of training 3 points

2. New Zealand Work Experience (Optional)

If your skill category gives you fewer than 6 points, you must make up the difference with skilled work experience inside New Zealand. Overseas experience no longer counts for points.

Duration of NZ Work Experience Points Awarded
36 months (3 years)3 points
24 months (2 years)2 points
12 months (1 year)1 point
Mandatory Job Offer Requirement: Even if you have 6 points (e.g., a PhD), you must have a skilled job or job offer in New Zealand paying at least the median wage to apply.
